Advancing Competition in Mexico

Comisión Federal de Competencia

Another strategic area we support projects in is Competition Policy, with a view to sustained high growth.

Our project on Advancing Competition in Mexico, has already resulted in a change in the law, and may yet result in further improvements. The project, working with Mexico’s Federal Competition Commission (CFC) to share best practice, improve public tendering and tackle monopolistic practices, has led to more severe punitive measures being made available to Mexican courts for individuals/companies found guilty of collusion or monopolistic practices.

Further, in September this year (2009), the Mexican Congress will be debating a broad series of measures to strengthen competition policy and punishment of those who abuse their position and/or market dominance.  If these laws are passed, this will be a significant step in bringing Mexican competition policy in line with international best practice.

We are intending to engage with key contacts and with Congress to speed the approval of this bill.
