The purpose of the Project is to assist the Mexican Environment Ministry (SEMARNAT) in the effective implementation of a regulatory framework and consolidation of a 3-way partnership (Timber producers, Business sector and government) to combat illegal logging through a voluntary certification process for legally sourced timber and a ‘green’ public procurement policy for timber.

This Project achieve a “The Certification Standard” which is the preparation of a certification standard with indicators for field assessments and rules for the certification process to to combat illegal logging.

The project collaborated with Semarnat in order to prepare and formalized the logo which will be the certification distinction, while it participated into a process that achieved the modification of the governmental procurement policies for timber and paper products making obligatory to all federal institutions to buy only certified products.

It also proposed and achieved the addition of the concept of “certification costs” in the list of Conafor´s Support Program (PROARBOL) for Ejidos and communities.

The negotiation with Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA) of the implementation system for accreditation of certification bodies . The promotion and training of certification bodies in order to achieve EMA's accreditation. Four certification bodies formalized its negotiation with EMA in order to achieve formal accreditation.
