Greenhouse gases voluntary business pilot program

CESPEDES

The purpose of this Project was to identify greenhouse gases (GHG) emission reduction opportunities. Through the promotion and capacity building of the industrial sector on the development of GHG Inventories and GHG Project Accounting, some companies participating in the Mexican GHG Program have since voluntarily undertaken the development of GHG reduction projects.

Before the establishment of the Mexican GHG program, there were only two projects from the business sector registered in the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism). As from March 2007, 5 companies increased their participation in the development of CDM projects.

The Mexican government recognizes the Mexican GHG Program as a tool that increases awareness related to climate change, builds capacity for the development of GHG inventories, promotes and supports the development of GHG emission reduction projects. Reason for which the government actually adopted the Mexico GHG Program as part of the National Strategy on Climate Change, which was launched in May 2007.

The status of the GHG Program changed from pilot to permanent program.

Until January 2009, 70 companies/organizations/institutions have subscribed in the Mexico GHG Program, out of which 47 companies/institutions/organization submitted their GHG Inventory, accounting for 118 MMton CO2, in December 2008.

Additionally, the Mexican GHG Program has been promoted to be part of the Special Program on Climate Change (PECC). The Mexican GHG Program set its own objectives in the PECC in order to contribute to the national effort towards GHG mitigation.
