Measuring for Success
Instituto Mexicano para la Competitividad
Improving regulation for high growth in Mexico is a key area of work for the UK government here. This project was one of a group of projects, which looked at benchmarking regulation to provide incentives for local and state governments to improve their performance in this area.
The purpose of this project was to provide Mexican states, metropolitan areas, and municipalities areas with action plans to improve existing business regulation and enforcement using the Measuring Competitiveness Index and Doing Business Index as benchmarks.
Through this project we worked with the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) to produce a report on doing business at the State level (now an annual publication), and to provide recommendations for improving State-level regulation. Since the launch of this project, six states have begun working with IMCO and the Federal Ministry of the Economy to draw up and implement action plans to improve their competitiveness, with many more States eager to do the same as soon as the capacity becomes available.
