Building Capacity for Sustainable Tourism in Mexico

Ministry of Tourism and Rowens y Asociados

The purpose of the Project is to help community-based enterprises to develop sustainable tourism routes that effectively implement government policies, regulations and best practices through a model that may be replicated in other regions of the country.

As a result of the project the first community based eco-tourism enterprises (CBE) groups were formed with management, environmental and social principles. They received the Moderniza Certification and the Mexican Standard for Sustainability in Ecotourism (NMX 133), awarded by the Federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) and the Federal Ministry of Environment (SEMARNAT) respectively. This experience will serve as best practices reference at the national level and an excellent opportunity to foment the replication of the model around other community-based enterprises in the country.

The model developed is the first one in Mexico for CBE that integrates basic management principles, with elements of environmental best practices, and social responsibility. It was presented in the First National Community-based Eco-tourism Network Meeting, inviting other networks to join in this effort.
